How to Create a New Domain User Account

What is a domain admin account?
The domain administrator users are allowed administrative privileges for the entire domain. By default, the group has the local Administrator account on the Domain Controller as its member.

Why do you need create a domain admin account?
There is a built-in Administrator account on computer domain. Maybe this defaulted domain account is the most useful but the most dangerous account on your system. For security, you would better disable it and create another domain admin account. Also if you didn’t disable the built-in domain administrator account in the past, now you have just forgotten its password. To regain access to domain, you have to find the password or create a new domain account.

How to create domain admin account?
No matter your computer is a Domain Controller or a domain user, if you didn’t disable the built-in domain administrator account, it’s very easy for you to create a new domain admin user.

Optional 1: Have Built-in domain administrator to create a domain admin.
To set up a domain admin account, you should:

  • A. Create a new user on the domain controller;
  • B. Include the newly created user in the Domain Admin group.
  • Following are the whole procedures:
  • Step 1. Log in to the domain controller with the built-in domain administrator account.
  • Step 2. Click "Start->Administrative Tools->Active Directory Users and Computers".
  • Step 3. In the left pane of the “Active Directory Users and Computers” window, expand the contents of the newly created Active directory domain. (For example, the domain here in my PC is “andyserver.com)
  • Step 4. Right click “Users” folder, point to "New", and select "User" next.
  • Step 5. In the "New Object-User" windows, do the followings:
  • Type your first name, last name, full name and User logon name in the corresponding box, after done, click "Next".
  • Step 6. Enter your new password in the "Password" and "Confirm password" column. (Note: the password should meet the password complexity requirements.) And do not choose "User must change password at next logon". Then click "Next".
  • Step 7. Click "Finish" to complete the account creating.
  • Step 8. Now you can find the newly created domain user account in "Users" folder. Right click that account, and choose "Add to a group".
  • Step 9. In the "Select Groups" dialog box, type "Domain Admins" (without quotations) and then click "OK".

Optional 2: Have Windows Password Recovery Ultimate to create domain admin account when PC is locked or domain cannot be visited.
If your PC is locked or the domain on your PC cannot be visited, a third party application can be your last straw. Here I will take Windows Password Recovery Ultimate for instance. Below are the detailed instructions.

  • A. Download Windows Password Recovery Ultimate, and then install, run it on an accessible PC.
  • B. Insert a blank CD/DVD/USB Flash Drive to the computer. And then click “Burn” to start burning am ISO image file to CD/DVD/USB Flash Drive.

Before you forgot the domain admin password
In this situation, to change the domain password is quite similar to what a local Windows password does. As for the specific differences, please see the below.

This is the easiest one as far as I am concerned.

  1. On your computer desktop, press CTRL+ALT+DEL.
  2. In the Windows Security screen, click “Change Password”.
  3. In the User name box, enter your login name.
  4. In the password box enter your old password and new password respectively, and then click “OK” to finish.

(Note: Your new password should contain at least 3 of the following elements: English uppercase characters; English lowercase characters; Base 10 digits; Non-alphabetic characters.)

Method2: Change domain administrator password by using command prompt

  1. Click “Start” and then go to “Run”, next enter “cmd”.
  2. Now the command prompt has opened, using the following commands to change domain password: net user Happy Re123456. (Note: Happy is your domain username, and Re123456 is the new password, also this password should meet certain requirements which have been discussed in Method1.)
  3. Press “Enter” to finish the change.

However, the complex thing is the situation that you forgot the Windows domain password. So the methods above cannot be useful any more. Then, new ways should be figured out.

When you forgot domain password
Method3: Change domain admin password and other domain passwords with Windows Password Recovery Ultimate

Step1. Download Windows Password Recovery Ultimate online by searching for it on any search engine.
Step2.: Install the program to any unlocked computer, and prepare for a blank CD/DVD or USB Flash Drive.
Step3. Insert the prepared CD/DVD/USB to computer for burning the Windows Password Recovery Ultimate ISO image file into it. This can be easily done by clicking “Burn” button in the interface of that program.
Step4. After the burning process finishes, you just take out of your newly burned device and insert it to your locked computer.
Step5. Start the locked computer and set it boot from CD/DVD/USB Flash Drive. After setting done, reboot the computer.
Step6. Change domain password simply by clicking “Reset your password” icon in the interface after computer restarted.

Note: by using Windows Password Recovery Ultimate to change domain password, the newly password doesn’t have the need to meet the domain password policy in Method1. But here, my suggestion is that you’d better make your domain password strong for the sake of security.

How to Change Local Administrator Password

Every so often, it’s good practice to change local admin password for Windows OS. And I think most of computer users are performing this practice. However, frequent passwords changing can cause passwords forgotten. So here, I’d like to share some ideas on how to reset local admin password when you forgot it.

Occassion1: Your computer is a Domain Server or Controller

In Windows Server 2000/2003(R2)/2008(R2), if the machine is a Domain Controller, other users except for the domain administrator can logon to system. This is because local admin password doesn’t have the authorization to login in Domain Controller for interactive logon is not allowed in the local policy. So, under this circumstance, you actually do not have a “real” local administrator. Similarly, you cannot reset local admin password. Just forget it, because you can still use the domain admin to access to your machine.

Occassion2: Your computer is a Domain User

When your computer with Windows Server 2000/2003(R2)/2008(R2) is a member of a special domain, not the domain administrator, you can access to your PC with 2 kinds of logon methods—domain administrator logging and local admin or standard user logging. So, in this time, if you forgot local admin password, you can do the local administrator password reset as follows:

  • Step1. Find a credible password reset tool through the Internet.
  • Step2. Here I trust Windows Password Recovery Ultimate program and decide to use it. So first download, install, and run it into an accessible computer.
  • Step3. Insert a blank CD/DVD/USB Flash Driver into that computer. (Note: not the locked one.)
  • Step4. In the interface of Windows Password Recovery Ultimate program, click “Burn” icon to burn the program ISO image file into that blank device.
  • Step5. Insert the newly burned CD/DVD/USB Flash Driver into the target computer, and set computer boot from CD/DVD/ or USB Flash Driver. Next, reboot the computer.
  • Step6. Once the computer is restarted, an interface will show up. You can see two kinds of Windows Path: C:\WINDOWS and D:\WINDOWS listed there. You just choose the former one to change local administrator password, while the latter one is for domain admin password. Next click “Reset Your Password” → “Next”. Now find your local admin account, click it, and then click “Next”. After finished, click “Reboot” to end all the whole process. Now you can use the newly changed local admin password to logon to your PC.

Occassion3: Your computer is neither a Domain Controller nor a Domain User

Computer being locked by forgetting Windows local admin password is the most common problem when using Windows XP/7/Vista/2000/2003/2008. But here, I assure you that it is not a big deal at all, you can easily find or change your forgotten local admin password. As for the easiest solution on how to change local admin password is what I have introduced in Occasion 2, please follow those step-by-step instructions when you are in need.
